Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.”

Happy Birthday Madiba!

Johannesburg 18 July 2012– Exactly 94 years ago, was born the man that would have changed the destiny of South Africa and restored freedom to the black population, victim of racial segregation. Firstly colonized, then imported, exploited, segregated and left at the margins of society. Mandela was the voice of the people who had and has a hunger for justice. For equality. People who never lost hope in change and improvement, thanks to the brave and freedom-loving people like Nelson Mandela.
The rebel genius, freedom-loving Madiba - Mandela, born in Mvezo July 18, 1918, immediately shows his unbridled love for freedom, refusing to marry the girl imposed upon him by the village chief and escaping to Johannesburg at the age of 22, with his cousin Justice. During his university years, as a law student, he founded the Youth League , a youth organization fighting against the emerging apartheid regime. It was then in ’55 that he took an important part in the resistance movement against apartheid, joining the ANCUmkhonto we Sizwe (“Spear of the Nation” or MK), – which adopted the Freedom Charter in relation to the violation suffered by the black population. In his law firm “Mandela and Tambo,” his colleague and him provided free legal assistance to victims of discrimination, in honor of the anti-apartheid cause. His political engagement became even stronger in 1961, when he became commander of the armed wingof the ANC, of which he was a co-founder. In 1962 he was already imprisoned, because of information that the South African police received from the CIA about Mandela’s illegal travels abroad. He remained in prison for 27 years, refusing the parole in exchange of a renunciation of armed struggle (February 1985). Meanwhile, the world outside the prison was shouting ” Nelson Mandela Free”. The pressures of the international community compelled the South African president FW de Klerk to release Mandela in February 1990. It was the end of the illegality of the ANC, the anti-apartheid movement. Klerk and Mandela got the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1993.

“Nelson Mandela International Day” - On the 18th July 2009, the UN General Assembly proclaimed this day the Nelson Mandela International Day. Today Mandela celebrated his birthday with his family in his childhood home, while millions of South Africans greet their Madiba, the worldwide symbol of the struggle for freedom. He received a visit from Bill Clinton and inaugurated the library of the elementary school in Quni with his wife, Graca Mchel, and his daughter Zindzi.
